DIY Home Staging + Storage Done Right – Real Estate for Sale in Santa Monica

Posted by admin Posted in Uncategorized

Home staging, which is the art of preparing your home to be viewed by potential buyers, can be an expensive enterprise. Professional home stagers usually charge around $ 2 per square foot. Depending on the size of your home, this can translate into thousands of dollars. It’s no wonder many homeowners opt to stage their homes themselves.

Standard Rules of Home Staging

  • Replace all personal items with generic items, or just remove them.
  • Replace family photographs and embroidered towels with fruit baskets, cookbooks, plants, and soap baskets.
  • Remove all personal hygiene items from bathrooms.
  • Bring as much natural light into the home as possible.

Ask family and friends for honest feedback and advice. Most homeowners are too personally connected to their homes to remain objective.

Use self-storage. It’s essential that every room look as spacious as possible. Even if your home has plenty of storage space, be sure to rent a self-storage unit. It is important to remove all your personal items and to make the rooms feel as large as possible. Many potential home buyers will even want to see the home’s storage areas, so it’s also important to keep the basement, attic, garage, and hallway closets free of clutter. The last thing you want is a closet-full of board games and fishing equipment falling onto home buyers’ heads.

When choosing your self-storage facility, there are several important factors to consider.

Climate Control

If you foresee your home being on the market for a considerable amount of time, it probably makes sense to store your household items in a climate-controlled storage unit. Climate control is vital for those who live in an area where the weather fluctuates rapidly or becomes severely cold, humid, or dry. Also, if you have musical instruments, artwork, photographs, computers, leather couches, or wood furniture, a climate controlled unit is definitely the way to go.

As a general rule, if you wouldn’t keep it in a garage, you shouldn’t store it in a unit without climate control.

Access

When storing heavy items like couches or refrigerators, it is extremely helpful to have drive-up access to your self-storage unit. Also, some facilities provide their tenants with 24 hour access – perfect if you’re storing documents, music equipment, or other items that you need to access on a regular basis.
